As both a lawyer and online media publisher, 25-year-old Sean Walton, Jr. has always had his sights set on affecting progress and growth in society on a large scale. Serving as co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning theFreshXpress.com, “The Pulse of Young Black America”, Sean has given a platform to the voice and vision of Black Americans across the country. As an attorney at The Cochran Firm Ohio, he practices in the areas of Personal Injury, Civil Rights, and Criminal Defense.
TheFreshXpress.com has reached over 2.5 million page views in the two years since its inception, while allowing over 250 writers to have their voice heard on numerous political and social issues. Hosting many highly popular and in demand events throughout the country, the “Fresh” brand has become synonymous with progressive discussion and debate amongst young Black Americans. Recently, Sean co-founded The Fresh Forward Project – a think tank and action vehicle geared towards mobilizing people around “Fresh” political and social issues.
Furthering his interests and future legal career, Sean has been a law clerk at Wright & VanNoy and The Issac Firm, focusing on criminal defense, employment law, personal injury, and various civil rights issues. He has also put his legal experience and expertise to use by interning with Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory and later, Federal District Judge Susan J. Dlott. He has conducted research for a soon to be released book authored by Professor Floyd Weatherspoon, The Deplorable Status of African-American Males in America: But No One Cares. He also sits as a board member for the Look Ma No Hands Non-Profit Organization.
In the past, Sean – a Dayton, OH native – graduated from high school at age 16 and finished college at 21, receiving a B.A. in Political Science and a Minor in African-American Studies from the University of Cincinnati. Acutely aware of the needs of the campus and surrounding community, he served as the Vice President of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., President of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Vice President of the United Black Student Association and Treasurer of the prestigious Sigma Sigma Men’s Honorary.
Pledging to make a difference in the lives of others, he was a mentor for incoming freshmen at the University of Cincinnati through the Transitions program and a tutor for No Child Left Behind. Seeing a need for more positive Black male involvement with young men, Sean founded and presided over a chapter of the Collegiate 100 Black Men of America on the University of Cincinnati’s campus. As president, he launched the Collegiate 100 Mentoring Initiative which reached out to both black male college students, and children in the surrounding communities.
Sean graduated in May 2011 from Capital University Law School in Columbus, OH, where he was a member of the National Black Law Students Association, moderating a panel on “Black Images in the Media” and also hosting a discussion on “The Role of the Black Lawyer” at the 2011 National Black Law Students Association Convention in Houston, TX.
His social commentary and knowledge base centers around the role and perception of African Americans in popular culture, law, and politics. His commentary has been featured by Tavis Smiley, in The Final Call newspaper, and acknowledged by Dr. Cornel West. Sean’s interests include African American history & culture, critical race theory, politics, sports, and hip-hop.
